The fields were set again this year for Malakoff’s Annual Sports Carnival, where 4 teams from 3 sites and KLHQ competed amongst themselves to see who’s the best at their respective games.
The competition that started on Friday with futsal men and ladies, tennis, squash, volleyball, golf, sepak takraw and bowling, saw the frustration of KLHQ as they didn’t managed to defend their title as futsal men’s champion when the title went to Tg Bin B team. KLHQ made a clean sweep at the bowling alleys, a feat that was made possible by their vigorous weekly training at Endah Parade.
Our new CEO, En Zainal Abidin Jalil came down to strengthen the KLHQ team in volleyball, with Senior Vice President of CSD, En Bani Zainal Azmian as his wingman. However, KLHQ’s dream to win the volleyball title was dashed by Tg Bin A, who won the title and contributed 3 points for Tg Bin in their race to win the overall champion. Most of the games on Friday were dominated by KLHQ, followed closely by the teams from Tg Bin.
Day 2 of the sports carnival was blessed again with a sunny day as the teams continued their battle to be called the overall champion. A cycling criterium race, which was started in last year’s sports carnival hosted by Tg Bin, were held in Putrajaya and saw the domination of KLHQ team and individual cyclists bringing home the overall individual and team, sprint and King of Mountain titles.
Lumut team thwarted KLHQ’s clean-sweep at the badminton courts when they defeated KLHQ to win the Men’s Doubles title. At the pool table, Tg Bin and Lumut teams proved to be the better teams when they won the Men’s single and Men’s Doubles titles respectively.
Then it was off to the showers as everyone dressed to impress for the Rock-themed Grand Dinner that followed later that night.
The ballroom at Shah Alam Convention Center witnessed the closet Rock stars that came dressed in leather pants, nose and navel rings, black lipstick a la Kiss, and metal chains around their waists. Guests were entertained by Sons of Adam who played rock songs throughout the night.
Chairman of Malakoff, Tan Sri Abdul Halim graced the dinner, with En Zainal dressed as a Rock star to present the prizes to the sports winners, 10-year long-term service award (LTSA) recipients, high achiever awards for children of staff who achieved the best results in UPSR, PMR and SPM. KLHQ was named the overall sports carnival champion for 2011, and 25 LTSA recipients were recognized and given awards by Tan Sri Abdul Halim and En Zainal for their loyalty to the company.
As we bade farewell to our fellow compatriots who came from all over Malaysia to participate in the sports carnival in UITM Shah Alam, we would like to record a special thanks to everyone who were involved in the sports carnival, from the planning up to the execution of the event. And to all winners, Congratulations, and we hope to see everyone competing again next year in Prai!
