Lumut Power Plant (“LPP”), owned by Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”), won the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health Excellence (“NCOSH”) Award 2018 for the “Electricity Facility” category from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (“DOSH”), under the Ministry of Human Resources, in a ceremony held at Mövenpick Hotel and Convention Centre, KLIA on 27 February 2019.

The Award was presented to Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali, Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff, by YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Dr. Wan Ismail, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, witnessed by YB Tuan M. Kulasegaran, Minister of Human Resources and his deputy, YB Dato’ Mahfuz Omar.

The prestigious NCOSH Excellence Award is a recognition at the national level to organisations with excellent track record in occupational health and safety management system and practices at the workplace.

Speaking on LPP’s win, Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad was humbled and honoured that LPP was selected as a winner this year. “This is a recognition of the good health and safety practices that are in place at our power plants. Besides operating our power plants according to the industry’s standard, we ensure that health and safety practices are ingrained as part of our working culture.”

LPP always strives to follow the guidelines set by DOSH and focuses on proactive initiatives towards excellence in occupational safety and health. Since last year, LPP embarked on Systematic Occupational Health Enhancement Level Programme or SoHELP to enhance occupational health standard at the workplace especially related to chemical management, ergonomic issues and hearing conservation, for which LPP achieved Level 5, the highest level of SoHELP’s implementation.

Amongst the initiatives implemented under SoHELP were the replacement of Hydrazine Hydrate in the plant’s cooling water system with Sodium Molybdate, a less toxic and better corrosion inhibitor and the establishment of ear plug stations at the plant’s process areas.

Another notable initiative taken by LPP to monitor the progress of outstanding safety issues at plant was by establishing a web-based Management Action Plan Tracker. The system enables them to keep track of the status of safety audit findings.

LPP Plant Manager, En. Mohd Salehuddin Abu Bakar expressed his gratitude towards LPP staff who have shown tremendous support and cooperation in adhering to the additional health and safety initiatives put forth at the plant.

“This achievement would not have been made possible without the camaraderie shown by all LPP staff in supporting programmes such as SoHELP and other initiatives. Not only did it reinforce our existing health and safety practices, it also creates enough awareness for staff to apply the same principles outside of the workplace.”

This is a second time LPP won the award after the first win in 2011. In 2017, Prai Power Plant, also a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malakoff, won the same Award.
