As a continuous effort to educate students on the importance of environmental preservation and maintaining a clean surrounding, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) held a series of awareness talk for its adopted schools on 24 October 2019 at SK Sungai Durian in Mukim Serkat, Johor and on 6 November 2019 at SK Segari, Perak.

Malakoff was represented by En. Mustpha Kamal Zainal, Head of Maintenance, Tanjung Bin Energy Power Plant (TBEPP) and En. Mohd Salehuddin Abu Bakar, Plant Manager of Lumut Power Plant (LPP) at at SK Sungai Durian and at SK Segari, respectively.

To mark the occasion, the respective heads of schools and Malakoff representatives planted various tree saplings in the vicinity of the schools.

True to the programme’s theme of “Better Environment, Better Tomorrow”, speakers from TBEPP and LPP conducted the Environmental Awareness talks at the respective schools. To get the ball rolling, the speakers set the mood by playing the National Environment Day theme song which had the schoolchildren singing along and dancing.

The speakers then continued with the talk that touched on topics such as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, deforestation, loss of endangered species and public health issues, amongst others. Their attentiveness paid off as many of them answered the quizzes posed by the speakers correctly to win prizes.

During the second segment of the programme, the schoolchildren were impressed by the water filtration demonstration led by Malakoff’s team of volunteers from the Chemical & Environment Department.

Head Mistress of SK Segari, Puan Nor Zainab binti Ahmad acknowledged Malakoff’s efforts and said that “the programme heightens environmental awareness amongst the children who will then share it with their families and subsequently, with their local community. Hopefully, this will create a more environmentally conscious society.”

SK Sungai Durian also started its own “Going Green” initiative by conducting an e-waste sale that managed to garner RM900 in total.

Norshahira Danish binti Danial Jong, a student from SK Sg Durian, thoroughly enjoyed the talk as it not only was informative but also made her understand the consequences of having a lackadaisical attitude towards keeping a clean environment.

“I especially enjoyed watching the water filtration demonstration. The process of turning the murky water sample into clean water by adding a few chemicals to purify is very educational and an eye-opener for me,” said Norshahira.
