43 Employees Distribute Food Packages And Blankets To The Needy

22 July 2013, Kuala Lumpur – Bringing smiles to the homeless around Pudu and Pasar Seni, employees from Malakoff Utilities Sendirian Berhad (MUSB), a subsidiary of Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff), shared the compassionate spirit of Ramadhan by donating food packages with drinks and blankets to those in need.

As part of its “Lighting Up Lives” programme, 43 volunteers took to the streets of the city in the wee hours of the morning, to ensure over 175 people who are homeless or struggling to make ends meet had a decent meal and the means to keep themselves warm. For the employees, it was a humbling yet rewarding experience which strengthened their commitment to volunteer for other community-based projects. The Corporate Social Responsibility programme was organised in collaboration with Kindness Dot My, a non-profit organisation.

Speaking about the initiative, Zainal Abidin Jalil, the Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff Corporation Berhad said, “As the age-old adage goes, charity begins at home and it is our obligation to assist our local communities, particularly the less fortunate, in ensuring that they too have a blessed Ramadhan.”

“There is a great sense of purpose that comes even from a simple generosity of providing food and warmth to those in need. I am pleased with our volunteers’ enthusiasm in extending the charitable spirit of Ramadhan year after year,” he added.

In the previous years, MUSB had financially contributed to various orphanages. Further to this, the Company had also repaired and refurbished the homes for the benefit of the children.

Nurain Mohamed Kalam, Manager of Marketing and Customer Service of MUSB who had volunteered with her colleagues said, “While we were distributing food packages and blankets, I was touched when the homeless community greeted us with smiles of gratitude. As long as we sincerely put our heart, time and energy into a charitable cause, our contributions though small will be meaningful.”

“The volunteering experience has not only allowed us to reflect on the simple blessings in our everyday lives but has also strengthened our commitment to contribute back to the community.”
