Malakoff Visits Maahad Al-Ansar for Annual Gotong Royong

6 April 2012

Last Saturday, volunteers from Malakoff headquarters in Kuala Lumpur once again visited Maahad Tarbiyah Islamiyah Al-Ansar to participate in the annual gotong royong that was held at the school in Kuala Selangor.

The annual gotong royong is part of our corporate social responsibility platform, the Malakoff Community Partnerships, in which one of the pillars is our commitment to the Community and Education. We continue to preserve the harmony between Malakoff and its stakeholders in the communities through activities such as this.

The gotong royong started with home-cooked breakfast to fuel the participants for the long list of tasks that awaited them. Volunteers from Malakoff and students from the school were then divided into teams to carry out tasks during the gotong royong.

Malakoff has been helping this school since 2002, not just financially but also in-kind by volunteering our time, efforts and “tulang 4 kerat” to improve the condition of this school and create a more conducive environment for the children’s studies and development. From a school with less than 100 students in 2002, it has grown with time and now 230 students reside at the school. The students are mainly orphans and the under privileged.

Electricians comprising of Malakoff staff also lent a hand to install new wall fans in the classrooms and repaired existing fans for the comfort of the students and checked the wiring as a safety precaution.

We were proud to see that the multi-purpose court that was constructed during gotong-royong last year had already been used by the students and staff for sport practices and tournaments. The one-hour activity period from 5.30 to 6.30 pm daily saw many students take this opportunity to get together with friends to hone their skills in sepak takraw, volleyball and badminton. Several inter-school tournaments of sepak takraw, volleyball and badminton were held at the school on this court that we had helped to construct. A year before, they had to be contented with playing badminton or volleyball with a court on uneven ground and makeshift net posts.

We were also glad to see that 10 computers and 1 printer that were also donated to the school during gotong royong last year were put into good use by the school. We understood that the items are used by all students and at least 50 students from the fifth and fourth forms used it consistently for their assignments using Microsoft Words and Excel. In this age of IT literacy, we hoped this small contribution that we made to the students of Al-Ansar will help prepare them for the fast-paced rat-race that awaits them after they leave the school.

After the tasks of cleaning the drains, toilets in boys’ and girls’ hostels, classrooms, grass-cutting and clearing rubbish in the vicinity of the school, everyone helped themselves with sumptuous lunch that were cooked in the school’s kitchen.

Prior to the gotong royong, monetary contributions were collected from Malakoff staff at the headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. The collection of RM5870 in cash was presented to the school, together with several clothing items and reading materials.

50 packets of 5kg rice, donated by Padi Beras Nasional Berhad (Bernas) were also presented to the school during the gotong royong.

Headmaster of Maahad Tarbiyah Islamiyah Al-Ansar, Ustaz Sazli Ansari, on behalf of the staff and students of the school, thanked Malakoff from the bottom of their hearts.

“Malakoff has been with us since 2002 and has been very attentive to our needs. Year in, year out, Malakoff has helped in making the condition of the school more conducive for the students to live in and study,” he said.

Thank you and God bless to those who were present physically and in spirit in making this gotong royong a success! May we have the opportunity again next year to give back to the society, especially our stakeholders in the community.
