Malakoff Wins Prime Minister’s CSR Award 2010

What’s it all about

Malakoff was awarded the prestigious Prime Minister’s CSR Awards 2010 in the Environment Category by YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Haji Mohd Yassin, on behalf of the Prime Minster of Malaysia YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak.

This award, initiated by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, was presented to Malakoff in the presence of leading members of corporate Malaysia and other dignitaries at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on December 1.

The Prime Minister’s CSR Awards 2010 is awarded to recognise companies that have made a difference to the communities in which they are active through their CSR programmes.

Key Environmental Initiatives

a) Mangrove Initiative

As part of grassroots initiatives, Malakoff introduced the Mangrove replanting and rehabilitation programme in areas surrounding the power plant in Tanjung Bin, during which the local communities including school children and the surrounding kampongs were invited to take part. At the event officiated by the Menteri Besar Johor, YAB Dato’ Haji Abdul Ghani Othman, a total of 3,000 copies of Mangrove Booklet were distributed to schools and local communities as part of our efforts to educate them on the importance of conserving and rehabilitating mangroves. During phase 1 & 2, a total of 20,000 mangrove saplings were replanted.

b) Ikan Siakap Initiative

Malakoff also undertook the Ikan Siakap Initiative to rehabilitate the Sungai Pulai river and support the livelihood of the local fishermen around the area. Working in collaboration with the local Fisheries Department and District Office of Pontian, Malakoff released 150,000 Siakap fry into Sungai Pulai, benefitting over 250 families from the fishing community have benefitted from this initiative.

c) Malakoff-USM Collaboration

To involve the youth in environmental conservation efforts, Malakoff collaborated with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to organise “The NEMGRADS USM-MALAKOFF Environmental Awareness Project 2010”, an environmental awareness project focusing on the importance of conserving the environment. Aimed at instilling social responsibility among university students, this programme saw a total of 250 students from 16 institutions of higher learning from all over Malaysia participating in this event. At the ACU (The Association of Commonwealth Universities) PR, Marketing and Communications Awards 2010, the project was awarded the winner in Outreach and Community Relations category.

d) Energy Expert Series

To ensure a balance between grassroots-based activities and thought leadership platforms, this year, Malakoff also initiated an industry-level lecture series focusing on Renewable Energy (RE) to contribute its part to support the Government’s vision of promoting RE as an alternative source of energy.

For this, Malakoff worked with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, especially the Malaysia Building Integrated Photovoltaic (MBIPV) team and the Association of Independent Power Producers (Penjanabebas) for the three lecture series organised earlier this year. Close to 300 power industry leaders participated and benefitted from the knowledge shared via these talks.

e) Green School Campaign

Malakoff also kick-started the Green Schools Campaign through Penjanabebas, working in collaboration with MBIPV (a project in association with the United Nations Development Programme). Each of the five schools, located across Malaysia, identified for this programme have had a 5kWp photovoltaic systems installed on their buildings to convert solar power to electricity.

While Malakoff is honoured to receive the Prime Minister’s CSR Awards 2010 for Environment, the Company recognises that it cannot rest on its laurels. The Award has served to further strengthen Malakoff’s commitment to continue to champion effective environmental initiatives that will strengthen the Company’s position as a proactive, sustainable and environmentally-conscious Malaysian company.
