  • Program Melentur Buluh – forming good habits among the young

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Program Melentur Buluh – forming good habits among the young 15 November 2011 Kalau nak melentur buluh, biarlah dari rebungnya is an old Malay proverb which shares the wisdom that should one wish to bend bamboo, tis’ best it be done when the plant is young and pliant. With this in mind, the young-at-heart & still very flexible team undergoing Malakoff’s Leadership Development Programme chose to initiate a fun, educational programme at Sek. Rendah Kebangsaan Andek Mori, Serkat over in Pontian, Johor bright and early mid school week. A neighbouring facility to the Malakoff-owned Tanjung Bin Power Plant, this school is one of the Company’s ten adopted schools nationwide. It was selected in support of Malakoff CSR initiatives or better known as the Malakoff Community Partnerships. It was a flurry of activities as Malakoff employees from its nearby plant also joined in the fray, making the total number of volunteers, teachers and children some 350 pax on event day! Also present to lend their strong support were En. Jainuddin, Senior Vice President, representing Malakoff’s Management team, En. Fauzan, representing the Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah, En Zaini, Penghulu Mukim Serkat, En Hamid Awaluddin & En Samad of Jabatan Bomba Pontian as well as the eloquent and friendly Sargeant Pn. Armila & Cik Azlina of Jabatan Polis Pontian. After gathering in the carpark behind the school hall, the children were divided into groups. Younger ones were given easier tasks like weeding patches in little gardens. Older ones were given "tougher" jobs like painting the assembly platform and library walls. Others were seen re-furbishing notice boards in the corridors and tables in the school library. And a select group was charged to diligently sort and arrange new books generously donated by Malakoff and supporters, onto waiting library racks. A Book Donation Drive carried out company-wide prior to this event day yielded a collection of some 450 books worth approximately RM7,000. Oh, the joy on the faces of the young librarians as they excitedly ripped open boxes and uncovered treasures within! After stacking the books neatly on the shelves, these proud librarians confidently shared this will surely draw more of their friends to visit and enjoy these latest literary offerings. After all that weeding, shoveling, scraping, cutting, pasting and painting, hungry children and adults alike were treated to a sumptuous spread of yummy local fare at the school canteen. Tasted just the way Mom & Grandma prepare it in kampong… Bellies full, the children then trooped off happily with their teachers and visitors to the Hall for the next round of activities. Aimed at creating an awareness of common (good) values or nilai-nilai murni among school children from an early age, this LDP Group chose to get such messages across via social activities. Besides promoting the healthy reading habit by donating books of interest and refurbishing the library together with the children, the next part of the programme provided children with a platform to showcase their talent as well as stress the importance of road safety and precautions one can take in the event of a fire. We were all highly impressed with the talent displayed when select children with learning disabilities took to the stage. They performed a series of local dances to great applause. The crowd was also treated to a medley of popular tunes by one of the students on an electric organ. And the unexpected highlight was the impassioned choral reading in English from an 8-year student. She turned out to be one of the finalists in the recent nationwide choral reading competition which was funded in part by Malakoff. Bravo! Given that this is a rural area and that many students came to school on either motorcycles with their parents or older family members or simply cycled in themselves, the Group sought to provide useful, practical safety tips for these students and teachers alike. It is hoped that the interactive lecture by Police Sargent Puan Armila and the exciting fire extinguishing demo session led by En. Hamid from the local Fire Department will have inspired the children to be responsible for safety on the road, in school and at home. And that they will also use the brand-new battery-operated blinkers & bicycle bells they received as door gifts, when they are next on the roads. This project was another great platform for Malakoff employees to demonstrate the Company’s firm commitment to being a caring organization and a good neighbour to schools and community folk in locations where it operates. And having lots of fun while at it! Well done to the LDP Group championing this project and THANK YOU to the rest of Malakoff staff and friends for their generous contribution in terms of books, time and physical presence!

  • Malakoff Kick Starts Third Phase Of Mangrove Rehabilitation With 8,000 Saplings

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff Kick Starts Third Phase Of Mangrove Rehabilitation With 8,000 Saplings 30 July 2013 Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) recently channelled RM60,000 to plant 8,000 mangrove saplings in Seberang Perai, Pulau Pinang, as part of the third phase of the Company’s Mangrove Rehabilitation Project aimed at restoring the eroding ecosystem in the coastal region. Initiated in 2009, the Mangrove Rehabilitation Project is an initiative under the Company’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) platform - the Malakoff Community Partnerships. Through the earlier phases, the project has resulted in 37,000 saplings being planted around the Johor region. This year’s effort was organised in close partnership with Persatuan Kebajikan Nelayan-Nelayan Pantai Pulau Pinang (PIFWA). Speaking about the initiative, Zainal Abidin Jalil, the Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff said, “We are pleased with the enthusiastic involvement of the local communities in our CSR efforts such as the Mangrove Rehabilitation Project. Such collaborations enable the communities to be a part of the programmes’ success while allowing us to build meaningful engagements with them.” “Malakoff’s previous mangrove replanting efforts in Johor have generated positive impact for the community and the environment in the surrounding areas. With the strong interest in conserving the ecosystem shown by the community in Seberang Prai, the same result can be replicated here,” he added. During the programme, Malakoff volunteers teamed up with the local communities, who are mostly fishermen and planted 2,000 saplings in Sungai Acheh and the balance of 6,000 saplings will be planted in stages around Seberang Prai Selatan. To ensure the success of the programme, two supervisors will be monitoring the mangrove’s growth and survival over the next year. Further to this, Malakoff has also sponsored the construction of a 120-feet mangrove walkway weaving through the forest. The new infrastructure will provide better access for locals and tourists to learn as well as appreciate the importance and role of mangrove reserves. Elaborating on the importance of mangroves for the communities, Ilias bin Shafie, president of PIFWA said, “Research has shown that the mangroves have played a crucial role as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and floods. Mangroves form a natural habitat for diverse marine life which is an important source of income for the local communities here.” “We are very grateful for the proactive measures undertaken by Malakoff for the benefit of the local communities in Seberang Prai. A healthy mangrove forest would not only strengthen the marine ecosystem, it would also help promote the area as an ecotourism destination, ultimately contributing to the local fishing communities’ economic well-being,” he added. During the previous two phases of the Mangrove Rehabilitation Project, 20,000 saplings were planted in Mukim Serkat adjacent to Malakoff’s Tanjung Bin power plant, while another 17,000 were planted in Tanjung Piai and Pulau Kukup National Parks. Meanwhile on its operations side, Malakoff has ensured its power plants comply with the stringent health, safety and environmental regulations in Malaysia. The Company’s power plants are ISO 14001 certified and comply with the highest regulatory standards.

The event, which carried the theme “Healthy Workplace and Lifestyle” was aimed to promote safety practices at the work place. In his opening speech, Plant Manager of Tanjung Bin Power Plant (TBPP), En. Aligned with HSSE’s theme for this year, the list of activities organised is largely aimed to nurture a healthy work-life balance among the staff such as fun ride, fishing competition, housekeeping and e-games besides the exhibition booths set up in the vicinity of the Complex. This year, the event was spread across two days as the number of activities had been increased since the previous year due to the overwhelming support from the participants, comprised of not only Malakoff staff, but also the local community. Day 1 on the HSSE Day celebration started off with the Tanjung Bin Complex HSSE Fun Ride, aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, was flagged off by En. Mohd Kopli. The ride was opened to all and attracted a total of 170 cyclists from Tanjung Bin and the local cycling teams namely Tayomox Fatbike, Pontian Cycling Team, UCT, Kobra MTB, Flex Riders, OJCT, KTB, Geng Jawa Ranger and Team S3 Cycling. A participant from Pontian Cycling Team, Mohd. Hisyam, applauded this initiative. He admitted that his team joined the event because it was organised by Malakoff and was one of the most anticipated cycling events of the year. “This is also a great platform for outsiders like us to connect with the people from Tanjung Bin as the latter played a significant role in our community.” In the meantime, a fishing competition was held at the Lafarge Jetty with 80 participants consisting of staff across TBPP and Tanjung Bin Energy Power Plant (TBEPP). Known as a sport that requires great patience and determination, even the hot scorching sun could not hamper the participants’ spirit to win a great catch. First place was won by Nakiudin with a 1.39 kg catch, followed by Azizul and Shafif in second and third places respectively with a 1.05 kg and a 0.75 kg catch. Day 2 had an energising start with an hour of aerobics and Zumba dance led by trainers from Smart Gym Pontian to keep the TBPP and TBEPP staff’s adrenaline going for the day’s planned activities. Later, everyone proceeded to its highlight of the day - a housekeeping activity in a bid to foster a work culture that is clean, healthy and conducive, and to support the 5s Campaign (Sorting, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) that’s currently being implemented in Malakoff. Staff were tasked to collect and dispose rubbish and unwanted items found around the building’s vicinity and re-organise items in their working areas. The staff also had the opportunity to reminisce their younger days by enjoying a host of indoor games such as ‘batu seremban’, ‘congkak’ and e-Games inside the Admin building. Exhibition booths were also set up by in-house contractors such as Turcomp, Benteng Prestu, MCIE, JMLM, IPSM, MSAA and Boiler Master to create awareness on occupational health and safety issues at work and staff were able to participate in quizzes to test their knowledge on the subject. The day concluded with a prize-giving ceremony by Head, O&M and Commercial, Local Generation Division, Abdul Halim Adnan to all winners of the Tanjung Bin inter-plant sports competition which included badminton, futsal and football that were held prior to the event.
