  • Malakoff Wins National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Award

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff Wins National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Award 17 December 2014 Best Practices in Health and Safety that Benefits Plant and Staff Proven to be the Winning Factor for Port Dickson Power Plant Port Dickson Power Plant (PDPP), owned by Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff), won the National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Award 2014, from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), under the Ministry of Human Resources, in a ceremony held yesterday at Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya. Speaking on winning the award, Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff, Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal Albar said, “Malakoff is honoured to receive this award as a recognition of our health and safety practices at our power plants. We have been operating our power plants according to the best practices in the industry and we strive to ensure that our staff also benefit by organizing health and safety programmes.” Mr Sankar MK Samy, Plant Manager of PDPP was pleased that the plant was selected as the winner this year. “Vigorous audits were done by DOSH across the country to determine the winner of the award. I’m proud to say that it was our in-house health programme involving our staff that gave us the winning edge against other finalists,” he said. Started more than ten years ago, the health programme at PDPP has evolved to suit the working lifestyle of the staff. Understanding the importance of a healthy workforce, the staff is allocated to exercise for an hour before the end of the working day, twice a week. During this period, staff are free to choose their activities, such as walking, running, or playing badminton, in the vicinity of the plant. The first aid room at PDPP is also converted to a wellness centre, equipped with a BMI measuring device, blood pressure and sugar level monitors, where each staff are given a health passport to encourage them to keep track of their own health condition. “The most notable achievement of this programme is that it empowers the staff to be responsible of their own health. The programme creates an environment to support health, including a ‘No Smoking’ support group for those who intend to stop the habit,” added Sankar. “The health programme at PDPP is just another example of various programmes organized in Malakoff to encourage staff to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Such programme brings the workforce together as it creates a sense of belonging and camaraderie amongst staff when they are involved in the activities,” concluded Syed Faisal. • Malakoff's "Learning Beyond The Classroom" Programme Benefits 118 Students

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff's "Learning Beyond The Classroom" Programme Benefits 118 Students 2 December 2010 It was just a little after 2pm and everyone just had a hearty lunch after a visit to Zoo Negara. It was time to say goodbye and the committee and volunteers were contented to see the smiles on the faces of the schoolchildren and the teachers who accompanied them as they bade farewell to each other after a 3-day-2-night stay in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Malakoff’s annual “Learning Beyond The Classroom” Programme brought joy to 118 deserving primary students from Malakoff’s ten adopted schools across Malaysia for a three-day educational trip to Kuala Lumpur. During their short stay, the trip was packed with activities such as quizzes and games, and visits to Petrosains, Menara Kuala Lumpur, Zoo Negara, High 5 Bread Museum and KLCC. Although it rained for 2 days, it didn’t dampen their spirits and they were seen eager to explore what Kuala Lumpur has to offer. Excitement was clearly seen on their faces as they explored the exhibitions at the various places of interests. Undoubtedly, the packed trip easily exhausted them as they only have a few hours of rest in the buses as they were taken from one place to the other. For the committee and volunteers, the enthusiastic chatters of the students were a relief for them as it was an indication that they enjoyed the trip and were full of energy amid the bad weather and the hectic schedule. Organised by Malakoff for the eleventh consecutive year, the “Learning Beyond The Classroom” Programme was initiated to provide exposure to the children on life outside their hometown and for them to gain extra knowledge, exposure and broaden their horizon. Since the maiden event in 2000, Malakoff has allocated over RM70,000 every year towards hosting this event, which is an integral part of the Malakoff Community Partnerships – the Company’s flagship CSR platform. During the trip, Yusop Abdul Rashid, Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications for Malakoff said, “We really want to help these students gain exposure outside of their own school and surroundings. So, we have specifically identified places to visit which are not only recreational but also help to impart knowledge. That way, while the children gain knowledge, they also enjoy the learning process. That’s the most important thing." “Malakoff has always recognised that education equals to empowerment and we want to be able to do our part to help these students to acquire knowledge not just from their books, but also experientially through such visits,” he added. The students were selected from Malakoff’s adopted schools namely, SK Segari, SJK (C) Pei Min and SJK (T) Ladang Huntly at Lumut, alongside SK Khir Johari, SJK (C) Chung Hwa and SJK (T) Prai at Perai as well as SK Andek Mori, SK Sg Boh, SK Seri Sinaran Chokoh and SJK (C) Pei Chiao at Pontian. Each year, Malakoff also allocates RM200,000 to support these adopted schools to equip them with better infrastructure and learning aids. This fund is specifically allocated to develop educational facilities such as libraries, computer and science labs, depending on the request from the school authorities. Headmistress of SJK (C) Pei Chiao from Pontian, Mrs Tin, was pleased that the students had learned many new things within a short period of time. “The Learning Beyond The Classroom Programme was very well organised and the students really enjoyed it. We are grateful to Malakoff for undertaking this Programme every year to provide an opportunity for these school children to experience and learn from the city,” she said. Mrs Tin also hoped that Malakoff will continue this program as it inspired the rural school children and gave them opportunity to visit places they only knew through newspapers and television. Despite the lashing downpour, the children remained enthusiastic and chirpy all through the tour. Chatter and laughter marked the three-day trip with students posing myriads of questions to their teachers and volunteers to soak in all the new things they were eagerly learning. As they boarded the bus to travel back to their respective hometowns fifteen Malakoff employees, who had also helped through the three-day visit, gave each student a goodie bag comprising of a t-shirt, a pair of shoes and a school bag, to gear them up for their classes in the year ahead. As the students bid farewell, they left for their homes with the sound wisdom that for the eager mind there are no boundaries for continuous learning and acquiring new knowledge.

  • Project Aware 2011 ~ Malakoff’s inaugural effort at Underwater and Beach Clean-Up (July 9 - 11, 2011) @ Redang Island

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Project Aware 2011 ~ Malakoff’s inaugural effort at Underwater and Beach Clean-Up (July 9 - 11, 2011) @ Redang Island 10 July 2011 “Thanks for organising a fun event with a noble purpose. Hopefully amidst the laughter and friendships made and found, everyone takes home the important message that Malakoff is advocating. We all have only one earth and one life. Let’s wake up and change our lifestyle/attitude to undo the daily destruction we impose on the environment. A round of applause for the hardworking Committee and the Project Director for an event well organised. Hope to be a part of this again in the coming years.” Huda Yunos, Vice President, Business Development, Al Rajhi Bank. “Great Job Malakoff team. I learnt some great lessons during the trip.” Tengku Razmi Tengku Othman, IBM Malaysia. “It was great stuff guys, well done! Please call us again next year.” Sharidz Iswadi Azhar, MRCB. ******************************** The day started off early as participants grouped to catch the first a boat ride from Merang to Redang Kalong Resort. The light rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the 71 participants anxious to embark on this 3 day -2 night outing ~ Project Aware 2011: Underwater and Beach Clean-Up @ Redang Island. A collaborative effort between Wirazone and parent company Malakoff, this environmental conservation project is the latest addition under Malakoff Community Partnerships, the CSR flagship of Malakoff Corporation Berhad. According to Ezham Abdul Khalid, Project Director, this trip was deliberately organized to involve both divers and non-divers comprising staff of Wirazone, Malakoff and business associates. The objective was to raise awareness on the importance of how inter-related the ecosystems of the sea and land are, and the effective roles we can all play towards conservation efforts. 30 licensed divers took on the potentially dangerous task of removing crown of thorns (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown-of-thorns_starfish for more info) which endangers coral and the reef as a whole. Guided by A.B. Lee, the resident dive master at the Resort, this activity went off without any injuries. Whew & Well Done, ALL! Non-divers had a whale of a time as well snorkeling and conducting reef checks. This is where they observed the colour gradients of the select types of coral and the various species of fish that thrive in the area. This determines the health of the reef around Redang Island. Next, all participants were involved in a beach clean-up exercise covering a two-kilometer stretch at the Resort. Removing rubbish from the beach is also vitally important in maintaining a balanced and healthy ecosystem as most of what we throw as rubbish on land will end up in the sea, one way or another. After being given a briefing and detailed checklist of what to look for, participations set off with gusto! Scouring the beach, they recovered plastic bottles, plastic bags, food wrappers, old shoes, broken air-cond pvc pipes and more! A plastic bag might not be seen as a dangerous item on land but they pose a huge danger to sea creatures like fish and turtles which mistake them for jelly fish, one of their food source. Very often, these plastic bags end up swallowed or wrapped around the heads of these poor creatures, suffocating them and eventually causing their death! Participants also learnt making do with less is actually more! Changing less bath towels means less washsoap water flowing to the sea. Less suntan oil means less oil contaminating the sea water. And all of these lead to better water quality, richer marine life, a more beautiful setting and a hopefully stable ecosystem we hope our children and grandchildren will get to enjoy. This project was made possible by Malakoff as the main sponsor, together with contributions from Wirazone and business associates which included Al-Rajhi Banking & Investment, Asian Finance Bank, Allianz General Insurance, MRCB Environment, Maybank and Sterling Insurance Brokers, and TV3 (media sponsor). Special thanks again to our Project Director, Ezham & our incredible Committee for the detailed planning and big hearts in making this successful project happen. And as requested by all participants, please call us again for the next project!

You can imagine how packed our landfills are. However, it is evident that the culture of recycling has progressively become prevalent among Malaysians as it was reported in 2022 that the national recycling rate had reached 33.17%, striving to achieve targeted recycling rate of 40% by 2035”, Encik Wan Ahmad Fareez explained. Both speakers also shared the facilities that Alam Flora currently offers to drive the interest of the public to shift their perspective on recycling and recycled materials. Its Fasiliti Inovasi Kitar Semula (“FIKS”) not only provides an Integrated Recycling Facility (“IRF”), but also serves as an educational hub for people to further educate themselves on the types of recyclable items and how they can be converted to oil, and more. A boutique – Butik 3R – that houses recycled clothes can also be found at FIKS. There were also fun activities and interactive booths for attendees to let loose and enjoy themselves. Overall, the event saw significant engagement from Malakoff staff, demonstrating its role as a valuable platform for educating everyone about the significance of recycling and how even the smallest choices can make a substantial environmental difference. This initiative is part of Malakoff’s continuous efforts at environmental preservation through various activities that focus on sustainable waste management and circular economy. It is also in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 12 which emphasises on sustainable consumption and production patterns.
