Malakoff Continues to Spearhead Marine Conservation Efforts through its ‘Save Our Sea’ Campaign

8 September 2022

Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”), in collaboration with the Perak Fisheries Department, led a marine conservation campaign, ‘Save Our Sea’, on 8 September 2022 at Teluk Senangin, Lumut, Perak. Aimed at providing awareness and education to Malakoff’s stakeholders and local fishermen on the marine ecosystem and the detrimental effects of single-use plastics and overfishing to the marine wildlife, the event was officiated by the Perak State Exco for Plantation & Agriculture and Food Industry, Yang Berbahagia (“YB”) Tuan Haji Razman Haji Zakaria and attended by the Lumut Plant Manager, Encik Lan Sulkaimy.

This year’s event witnessed an overwhelming participation of 350 students from various higher learning institutions in Manjung and volunteers from the surrounding community where they partook in a beach clean-up activity, followed by an environmental awareness talk by a representative from the Department of Environment (“DOE”) and 3R programmes facilitated by Malakoff’s subsidiary, Alam Flora Environmental Solutions (“AFES”).

The highlight of the event was the release of “unjam”, which is a hard formation of natural materials such as tree branches and coconut leaves, into the sea. This formation was tied and left floating on the surface of the sea to attract fish, giving opportunities for fishermen to extricate the endangered fish species from being captured, subsequently eliminating the danger of overfishing.

In his speech, YB Tuan Haji Razman emphasised the importance of environmental awareness and education among the public.

“The marine ecosystems are being threatened by multiple stressors all around the world. It is our responsibility as the inhabitants of this planet to ensure the sustainability of our aquaculture through not only education, but more importantly, action.”

“I am honoured to be working with Malakoff with this initiative as we are able to materialise our common goals in creating a sustainable future for all”, he added.

This initiative is part of Malakoff’s Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) initiatives, focusing on the Environmental pillar. Besides enhancing a close working relationship with various stakeholders and the local communities, initiatives like this is also a testament to Environmental, Social and Government (“ESG”) commitments and to our aspirations towards fostering change in accelerating the transition to a more sustainable society. This initiative is also aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 of Life Below Water, which gives focus towards conserving the ocean, seas and marine resources.
