Malakoff Joins the United Nations Global Compact Initiative, Aligning Itself with Global Sustainability Principles

5 February 2024

Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”) is proud to announce that it has officially joined the United Nations Global Compact (“UNGC”), which is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative for the development, implementation and disclosure of responsible business practices. The membership plaque was handed over by the UNGC Malaysia and Brunei Executive Director Mr. Faroze Nadar to Malakoff’s Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer (“MD & Group CEO”) Encik Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib on 6th February 2024 at Malakoff’s Headquarters at Plaza Sentral, Kuala Lumpur.

Launched in 2000, the UNGC comprises more than 15,000 companies based in over 160 countries, and more than 70 Local Networks. The UNGC calls on companies around the world to take measurable, credible and ambitious action in areas that have the power to accelerate progress across the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”).

By joining the UNGC, Malakoff has affirmed its commitment to upholding the ten universally accepted principles of the UNGC in the areas of the environment, human rights, labour standards and anti-corruption. Malakoff is also dedicated to incorporating the UN SDGs into its business strategy and pledges to submit an annual Communication on Progress ("COP"). This process serves as a mechanism for assessing and demonstrating the impact of Malakoff's actions that showcases the integration of responsible practices into day-to-day operations, simultaneously contributing to meaningful societal change.

Malakoff is the country’s first Independent Power Producer (“IPP”) to join the UNGC, in line with the Group’s aspiration to advance the transition to a low-carbon future and achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2050.

Malakoff embarked on its sustainability journey with the establishment of its Sustainability Framework in 2022. This roadmap not only guides eco-friendly and sustainable measure in business but also embeds them in the way Malakoffconducts its day-to-day business. The Group’s rebranding initiative in 2023 further solidified Malakoff’s commitment to transforming into a more sustainably conscious organisation, guided by a vision to be the leading global energy generation and environmental solutions player that shapes a greener future through innovation and sustainable best practices.

This initiative is part Malakoff’s initiative in establishing strategic partnerships in driving our sustainability agenda and in line with 13 out of the 17 UN SDG Goals. It also aligns with our purpose of ‘Enhancing Life, Enriching Communities’.
