  • Aidil Adha Aids for Segari and Mukim Serkat

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Aidil Adha Aids for Segari and Mukim Serkat 21 August 2018 Alhamdulillah, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) had the opportunity to bring additional cheer to the people of Kampung Segari, Perak and Mukim Serkat, Pontian, Johor through the donation of 4 cows for their Aidil Adha celebration. Hari Raya Aidil Adha is known for its sacrificial slaughter of animals or ‘korban’ in honour of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah’s command. The day’s celebration started with the congregation performing Solat Sunat Aidil Adha at Malakoff-sponsored Masjid Khairul Jariah, Kampung Segari and Masjid Al-Amin, Kampung Sungai Dinar, Mukim Serkat, followed by the sacrificial ritual. Then, groups from the local congregation gathered to help divide the meat in the spirit of gotong royong, and distributed bags of meat to the needy in their respective areas. Prior to this, representatives from Malakoff handed over livestock to the respective masjids in preparation of the korban. Plant Manager of Lumut Power Plant, En Mohd Salehudin Abu Bakar and Plant Manager of Tanjung Bin Power Plant, En Mohd Kopli Yunus handed over the cows in simple ceremonies held in their respective local communities. At Masjid Al-Amin, the handing over ceremony was also attended by YB Suhaizan Kayat, Johor State Assembly Speaker who accepted the cows on behalf of the Masjid. In his speech, YB Suhaizan acknowledged Malakoff’s continuous contribution to the community in Mukim Serkat. “Masjid Al-Amin has become the focal point for the community here as a place of worship and where they can carry out community activities, thanks to Malakoff’s generosity and commitment. Undoubtedly, a community that prays together, stays together.”

  • Malakoff 4th Annual Charity Ride 2009

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff 4th Annual Charity Ride 2009 16 April 2009 The 4th Annual Malakoff Charity Ride concluded 10 days ago but the sights and sounds of the ride still lingers in my mind. Cyclists hanging on to support vehicles as their thighs and calves cramped, the vast paddy fields as far as the eyes can see and local folks happily waving to the passing peloton were some of the many familiar sights as we headed for our 3-day ride from Yan, Kedah to Krabi, Thailand, via Wang Kelian and Trang. This was the furthest and most challenging ride so far held by Malakoff, at 530km in distance. On the first day itself, the cyclists have to face tough terrains in Perlis and the last 10km of the 190km was the nastiest climb ever in Malakoff’s charity ride history. Even the toughest of cyclists gave up on the last 5km of the ride as the climb was very steep. The second day, with a total distance of 180km, cyclists braved themselves in the rain for almost half of the ride. They started riding from the border of Wang Kelian at approximately 8am (Thailand time) and passing through peaceful Muslim villages in Thailand. The foreign signboards greeted the cyclists as they went by. The roads were as beautiful as the vast natural landscape as the road shoulders were wide and potholes were almost non-existent. The rain that soaked the cyclists halfway through the ride didn’t dampen their spirits. In fact, not many cyclists stopped to nurse their cramps! Maybe it’s because the route was only slightly undulating and thankfully less rolling to cause cramps. The superb home-cooked lunch welcomed the cyclists and crew near Tom Yam town that were eagerly devoured by the hungry cyclist. At approximately 3pm the cyclists arrived in Watana Park Hotel in Trang for a well-deserved rest. In Trang, some took the opportunity to treat themselves to Thai massages that costs around RM30 for 2 hours while some went into the town and visited the night market for some souvenirs. The third day was blazing hot for the finale. Although the day started with a 10-minute ride in the rain, the cyclists were fooled into thinking that the day would be cloudy throughout and their skins would be saved from sun tan. It was hot all the way from kilometer 50 onwards that forced them to drink at least every 10 minutes on the bike. Some even had to stop to take a leak as the volume of water that they had consumed on the bikes threatened to burst their bladders. At last, they reached Krabi Heritage Hotel in Krabi at approximately 4pm, all satisfied and sunburnt. After reaching the 530-kilometer mark from the start, the cyclists set aside the aches and pains for a while to take the opportunity to photograph their arrival in Krabi as a proof that their weekly training had paid off. Congratulations to all cyclists and the wonderful supporting crew and see you again next year for another edition of Malakoff Charity Ride! A big thank you to En Ahmad Jauhari continuous support for the Ride and to the committee for organizing this event! Facts of the ride: The charity ride managed to collect RM 73, 880 from Newwin Engineering, Alstom Services, Rajah & Tann, Allianz Insurance, Algo Tech, Integrated Engineering Services, Sime Darby Energy PDP, Malaysian Coal Integrated Engineering, Sterling Insurance Brokers, Teknologi Tenaga Perlis Consortium, Global E-Teknik, Genting Sanyen Power, Inno Quantum, ISHI Power, KAF Investment Bank, Petronas Gas, Rangkai Positif, Shakab Enterprise, Sumi Power Malaysia, TOS Energy, Bank Rakyat, Al Rajhi Bank, Alcim Technology, Aras Marine, Bank Muamalat Malaysia, Tita Tech Engineering, Randy Tan & Ivie Ong, CIMB Islamic Bank, Rentak Jitu, PBJV Group, Dyna Dinamik, Zastra. The charity was distributed to 6 charity homes in Yan and Wang Kelian - Rumah Budi Yan Kedah, Rumah Amal Yan Kedah, Pusat LAtihan Dalam Komuniti Yan, Pertubuhan, Kebajikan Anak Yatim Perlis, Rumah Seri Kenangan Kangar, PDK Indera Kasih, at RM11, 480 each - and RM5, 000 to the community of Trang and Krabi, Thailand. • Malakoff Charity Ride 2009

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff Charity Ride 2009 7 April 2009 Scorching hot sun, strong coastal wind, heavy rain, long arduous inclines. These are just a few elements that the cyclists had to go through during the 3-day charity rides. So why do some cyclists keep on signing up every year when they know the challenges that they will face for the next 3 days? Some called it pure stupidity, some called it the verge of insanity. But some simply call it pure torturing pleasure. I could still remember the first Charity Ride that I joined 2 years ago. It was the Putrajaya-Kuala Pilah-Summerset Rompin-Kuantan ride. The distance was 404km, which to me at that time, was intimidating enough, adding to the fact that the cyclists would have to face Bukit Mandum just before Lenggeng, followed by Bukit Putus en route to Pilah, the rolling roads of the Feldas en route to Rompin on the second day, and of course the coastal winds en route to Kuantan on the third day. Flag-off at Charity Ride 2008 in Gombak As dark clouds gathered at Pantai(Negeri Sembilan) just before we continued our journey to Pilah after Friday prayers, I turned to ask Sharef, what are we going to do if it rains? To that, Sharef answered simply, “Sorry, sis, this is a rain-or-shine event. Unless there’s thunder and lightnings, we will keep on pedaling to the next destination.” Tough luck! I remembered that I was at the back of the pack, well actually the pack left me and a few other cyclists to survive the heavy rain up Bukit Putus. In front of me, I noticed a fellow cyclist by the name of Jack and I made it a point that I was never to leave this guy out of my sight, even if I had to cycle till I faint! (Basically, the idea was if there were any pot holes on the roads, Jack would hit it first, and I would have time to swerve and avoid hitting my wheels in them.. Clever isn’t it? But don’t tell Jack, OK!) Of course I received a thunderous applause from the guys at our regrouping area for conquering Bukit Putus in the rain. When I looked back and thought about going downhill in the pouring rain, my legs will always turn jello. What if I made a bad judgment and slid off the tarmac, into the ravine near Bukit Putus? What if! Thank God nothing bad happened to me and all the others, except for the usual cramps and dehydration. Resting en route to Temerloh When the MD/CEO suggested that we rode further for the 3rd edition of Charity Ride (in 2008), few of the cyclists were sceptical that we would even finish the whole distance. Charity Ride ‘numero tres’ featured an additional 76km from the previous year’s and proved to be harder with more climbs and longer riding hours. The route was from Gombak to Temerloh (via Genting Sempah and the rock ‘n rollin’ Felda Mempaga), to Kemaman and ended on the third day in Kuala Terengganu. The distance was 140km, 180km and 160km. For those who are unfamiliar with cycling terms, 180km is equivalent to the cycling distance in the Ironman, and 160km is called a Century (i.e. 100 miles). Added to that, we faced the coastal winds from the South China Sea, from the front, sides and the back. Trust me, although the route was mostly flat on second and third day, the wind added the challenge as we had to hang on tight to the handlebars as we rode along the serene countryside, with the occasional kampung kids cycling alongside us, trying to outdo us on our roadbikes! Somewhere near Marang peloton on the second and third day. There were a mix of girls and boys as young as 11, and the best thing was their parents took turns to act as marshal in a support car to accompany the kids during their trainings! How cool is that! No wonder there are many top cyclists that came from Terengganu! Apart from the long, hard rides, what touched me the most was the faces of the unfortunate kids and folks that were our special guests at the dinners that we normally have at our stops during the rides. There were HIV positive kids from Pernim, who were lovingly cared for by Puan Norlina Alawi, the founder of Pernim. There were also the orphans from Persatuan Anak-anak Yatim Darul Izzah, Temerloh, who, behind the sweet smiles, must have longed to hear and hold their departed loved ones. Kids at Darul Izzah The dinner at Temerloh that was held at Darul Izzah gave us the opportunity to see the orphanage first hand. Halfway through the dinner, there was a blackout for nearly half an hour and we had to carefully eat our ikan patin masak tempoyak with inadequate lighting, to avoid choking on the patins’ fine bones. I was told later that blackouts were a norm at the orphanage as the electricity supply there was insufficient to cover the needs of the whole kampung. Hence after the dinner, we did an adhoc donation drive and collected nearly RM500 from the cyclists and support crew to be given to the orphans of Darul Izzah. We hoped that the donations given to them, through Malakoff, were able to ease their burdens and help the charity institutions carry on with their day-to-day operations. Besides having fun cyling alongside friends and enjoying the scenery throughout the event, we must also remember that we carry the task to deliver the donors’ ‘amanah’ to the less fortunate. I personally felt that by visiting them, we are able to appreciate what God has given to us, be more humble and praise God for the good well-being that He has bestowed upon us that enabled us to cycle and visit them to deliver the donations. May all of us are given good health, good route, good weather and good companionship for this year’s journey. Us in Temerloh

  • In Harmony with Nature

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back In Harmony with Nature 9 October 2008 Wirazone had its first event with its customers on 9th August, 2008. It was successfully held at Taman Alam @ Natures Park, Kuala Selangor. Being in operation since the year 2000, it was about time Wirazone came up with an activity that involves its customers and where Wirazoners will be able to bridge the gap with its customers and mingle with them. This event was sponsored and organized by Malakoff and Wirazone, in support of Malaysia Nature Society. The idea of having the activity at the Natures Park was in line with Malakoff’s CSR objective to support non profit organization on its effort for the environment. It was a one-day event that started from 8.30am and ended at 6.00pm, but we had enthusiastic customers who arrived as early as 7.45am! In Kuala Lumpur Sentral, the promotion for the event started in early July 2008 where flyers were distributed to all customers in Kuala Lumpur Sentral to notify them of the event. From 29th July to 1st August 2008, a booth was set up at the Lobby of Plaza Sentral (next to Gloria Jeans) to attract more customers for the event and also to create awareness of who Wirazone is and its nature of business in Kuala Lumpur Sentral. The booth was manned by staff from Customer Service Department and from Malaysian Nature Society (MNS). At the same time, there were buntings strategically placed along the walkway to Sooka Sentral, Lobbies of Stesen Sentral Kuala Lumpur and Plaza Sentral as well to attract more participation. However, due to certain limitation, the participation was limited to 100 people on a first-come-first-serve basis. On the day itself, 70 people turned up including staff, excluding the volunteers from MNS. Amongst the activities organized were the Mangrove Talk and Walk, Mangrove Boat Rides, Photography Talk, Nature Crafts Activity and Coloring Contest for children. Wirazone would like to extend its gratitude to all Wirazone staffs, the Corporate Services Department, Sub Contractors of Wirazone, the Admin Department and not forgetting our Practical Trainees for their support throughout this event. It was a great and valuable experience for all of us in Wirazone and we hope to have more events like this in the near future!

  • Prai Power Plant’s HSSE Week Enforces Camaraderie Among Employees

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Prai Power Plant’s HSSE Week Enforces Camaraderie Among Employees 20 December 2018 Malakoff’s Prai Power Plant (PPP) held its Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Week celebration from 12 to 21 December 2018, aimed to create health and safety awareness amongst the staff and maintain a good working relationship with the local authorities. The event was officiated by the Plant Manager, En. Lan Sulkaimy Md Yusof and attracted more than 50 participants, comprising of Malakoff staff and guests. In his welcoming speech, he stated that in 2018, PPP has initiated a plan to control commuting accidents around and outside the plant as part of the health and safety culture at the plant. By cooperating with the local authorities, PPP also managed to carry out safety drills and exercises to heighten the safety awareness of the staff by testing on their emergency preparedness. “It is important for us to maintain good co-operation with the authorities and simultaneously, educate ourselves on accident prevention because when an accident occurs, we will be quick to respond and alarm the local authorities”, he added. The week-long celebration kicked off with a congkak competition among staff held in the Admin building. Outside, supporters cheered at the top of their lungs for their teams in an exciting Tug of War competition held at the field in front of the building. The participating teams were segregated by departments namely Electrical, Mechanical 1, Mechanical 2, C&I, Admin, Operation and a Mix team consisting of members from various departments. Apart from these, a fishing competition was held for staff who are avid anglers to participate. As part of the plant’s 2018 target to minimise environmental impact, staff were encouraged to collect e-Waste such as discarded electronic parts, rechargeable batteries and fluorescent tubes. These would be sent to the Department of Environment (DOE) to be properly disposed off or recycled by DOE’s approved vendors. The HSSE Week took on a more educational route as three informational talks covering health and safety topics were organised. Acknowledging that the plant has also been gazetted as a ‘Kawasan Paling Penting Negara’ by Jabatan Sasaran Penting Negara (JSPN), ASP Hamdan Abdul Latip of IPD Pulau Pinang was invited to speak on “Handling Bomb Threat” to fulfil PPP’s objective in reviewing their Emergency Response Plan (ERP) in handling such situation. In a bid to reduce commuting incidents, a formal safe-driving discourse was held by Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya (JKJR) that further delved into the topics of defensive driving and ways to prevent or minimise the likelihood of an accident. As an effort to curb work-related stress which can subsequently cause unwanted safety incidents, Professor Dr. Mohd Jamil, Consultant Psychiatrist from KPJ Hospital Prai presented on “Stress Management Awareness” due to an alarming incline in staff affected by stress presumably due to an accumulative pressure from work and daily responsibilities. The HSSE Week celebration would be incomplete without a drill demonstration aimed to create awareness and to test the skills on the Emergency Response Team on site. This time around, the highlight was a demonstration of a chemical spillage drill caused by an accident between a bicycle and a forklift at site. The demo was conducted by PPP HSSE team in collaboration with the Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Prai. Based on a foreseeable event, the drill tested on all parties’ ability to comply to the prescribed Emergency Response Plan in a timely and efficient manner to ensure that any chemical spillage is contained and the injured is given the proper attention. The demo truly captured the necessary steps needed to be adhered to by staff and the local authorities to control the situation before proceeding with the recovery plan. As an appreciation and a show of camaraderie between PPP and Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Prai, both teams went head-to-head in a friendly Tug of War which filled the place with shouts and cheers from spectators. After an exhilarating 15 minutes, PPP team won the match. After an action-packed week, the event concluded on 21 December with a prize giving ceremony by En. Lan to all winners and a presentation of tokens to those who celebrated their birthdays in November and December.
